William McGowan To James Gillespie
Deed for 6 1/4 acres lands
This indenture made the eleventh day of November in the tenth year of American
Independence, & in the year of our Lord 1785, Between William McGowan of the State of
No. Carolina & County of Duplin of the one part & James Gillespie of the same State &
County of the other part. Witnesseth, that the said William McGowan for & in consideration
of the sum of eleven acres & one quarter of an acre of land conveyed by the said James
Gillespie to the said William McGowan of this day & date the receipt whereof is hereby
acknowledged & himself therewith content hath given granted bargained sold aliend enfeoffed
conveyed confirmed assigned & set over unto the said James Gillespie his heirs & assigns
forever, a certain tract or parcel of land situate lying & being in Duplin County aforesaid
on the south side of the mill branch adjoining & between the lands of the said William
McGowan & James Gillespie, Begining at a white oak on the edge of the swamp of said Branch
near the mouth of a small branch, thence So. 12 Et. 34 poles across the mouth of the small
branch & up the middle of a bottom to a white oak, thence South 66 Et. 25 pole to a small
pine near the head of the bottom, thence So. 30 Et. 28 poles to a large white oak in the
line that divides the lands of the said McGowan & Gillespie, then No. 36 pole to a white oak
& ashe, thence No. 45 Wt. to the begining, containing by estimation six acres and one fourth
of an acre. To have & to hold the said bargained land & premises with the appurtenances unto
the said James Gillespie his heirs & assigns forever, in as full & ample manner as he the
said William McGowan might or could enjoy the same had this deed never been made, without the
least let molestation or interuption of him the said William McGowan his heirs or assigns, &
that free & clear freely & clearly acquitted of & from all former or other gifts grants bargains
sales leases wills mortgages intails jointurs judgments executions entents troubles or
incumbrances whatsoever had mad done or committed by him the said Wm. McGowan his heirs or
assigns & the said William McGowan doth hereby further covenant & engage to warrant & defend
the said James Gillespie his heirs & assigns in the quiet & peaceble possession of the said
lands & premises, from & against the lawfull or just claim of him the said William McGowan his
heirs or assigns or any other person or persons whatsoever. In witness whereof the said
William McGowan hath hereunto set his hand & seal the day & year first written.
