Joseph Johnston To Francis Johnston
Deed of 228 acres of lands
North Carolina. This indenture made the thirtyeth day of May in the year of our
Lord on thousand seven hundred and seventy seven, between Joseph Johnston of the province
aforesaid and County of Duplin of the one part, and Francis Johnston of the same province
& County of the other part. Witnesseth, that for and in consideration of the sum of one
hundred and twenty pounds proclamation money to him the said Joseph Johnston in hand paid
before the ensealing & delivery hereof well and truly paid by the said Francis Johnston
the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged he the said Joseph Johnston hath granted bargained
sold aliened enfeoffed conveed & confirmed unto the said Francis Johnston his heirs & assigns
forever, all that tract of parcel of land lying and being in the County & province aforesaid,
being on a branch of the Golden Grove Swamp, commonly known by the name of Buckskin Branch,
containing two hundred and twenty eight acres, lying on the head of Buckskin. Begining at
said Johnston's upper corner a pine running thence So. 66 Wt. 160 po. to a R. O. thence So.
24 Et. 140 po. to a R. O. thence So. 80 Wt. 40 po. to a B. Q. thence No. 70 Wt. 130 po. to
a B. Q. thence No. 30 Wt. 80 po. to a B. Q. thence Wt. 54 poles to a pine thence No. 144 po.
to a small pine thence to the first station being in part of seventy one thousand one hundred
& sixty acres of land granted to Henry McCulloch Esqr. the third day of March 1745 reference
being thereunto had may more fully and at large appear. with all trees woods waters and water
courses profits commodities heriditaments & appertenances whatsoever to the said land belonging
on in any wise appertaining one moiety of all mines & minerals reserved for the use of the
said Joseph Johnston his heirs & assigns and the reversion & reversions remainder & remainders
rents issues & profits thereof & of every part and parcel thereof & all the right title claim
interest & demand whatsoever of him the said Joseph Johnston his heirs & assigns of in and to
the said two hundred and twenty eight acres of land & premises and every sort and parcel thereof
to To have & to hold the said granted and prebargained preises unto the said Francis Johnston
his heirs & assigns to him and their only proper use benefit & behoof forever he or they he or
they being subject to the payment of the quit rents due to the Crown & all other covenants
mentioned in the said patent and I the said Joseph Johnston do by these presents for me my
heirs executors administrators & assigns covenant promise & agree to and with the said Francis
Johnston his heirs & assigns in manner and form following. That is to say that he the said
Francis Johnston his heirs & assigns shall & may from time to time & at all times forever
hereafter by force & virtue of these presents lawfully peacibly & quietly here hold use occupy
possess & enjoy the said bargained land & premises and every part & parcel thereof free &
clearly freely & clearly by & from all and all manner of incumbrances & incumbrances whatsoever
had made or done or committed by the said Joseph Johnston his heirs or assigns except as before
executed & the said Joseph Johnston his heirs & assigns against the lawfull claim or demand of
any person or persons whatsoever. Witness whereof the said Joseph Johnston hath hereunto set
his hand & fixed his seal the day & year first above written.

Then was the written deed proved in open Court by the oath of David Greer and ordered
