(Transcribed by Joan S Dunn) Deed Book 1 A Page 222, & 223 John Whitman To John Cranford Deed For 141 acres lands This indenture made the eighteenth day of Jan'y in the nineth year of American Independence and in the year of our Lord Christ one thousand seven hundred and eighty five, between John Whitman of the State of North Carolina and County of Duplin of the one part, & John Cranford of the same place of the other part. Witnesseth, that the said John Whitman for divers good causes & consideration him thereunto moving, but more especially for the valuable consideration of the sum of fifty pounds specie to him in hand well & truly paid or secured to be paid by John Cranford aforesaid before the ensealing and delivery of these presents, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged hath by these presents, given granted bargained sold assigned and set over to the said John Cranford his heirs and assigns forever, one certain tract or parcel of land sittuate lying and being in Duplin County aforesaid on the No. side of Maxwell swamp, joining the lins of Henry Gillman & Adam Platt. Begining at a white oak in the fork of Maxwell and Stockinghead swamp, thence No. 45 Wt. 155 poles to a water oak in the mouth of a small branch of Stockinghead, thence So. 45 Wt. 142 pole to a pine Adam Platt's corner, thence as his line to his corner & past So. 35 Et. 140 pole to a water oak on Henry Gillman's line, thence his line to the begining being the contents of a paten granted to the said John Whitman the first day of July Anno Domini 1779, containing one hundred and forty one acres be the same more or less. To have and to hold the said bargained land & premises with all the appurtenances to the same belonging or in any wise appertaining of every nature or kind whatever to him the said John Cranford his heirs & assigns free from all former grist grants mortgages intales wills executions entents & troubles whatever, and the said John Whitman the aforesaid land & premises with all the appurtenances to the same belonging or in any wise appertaining shall and will warrent & forever defend to him the said John Cranford his heirs and assigns forever, from and against him the said John Whitman his heirs & assigns as also from and against the just & lawfull clame of all and every person or persons whatever, who may hereafter lay any lawfull clame to the same. In witness, whereof the said John Whitman hath hereunto set his hand & seal the date above written. John Whitman Signed Sealed & delivered in presence of us Thomas Routledge Joseph T.
