John Holden To James Carr
Deed for 240 acres lands
To all to whom these presents shall come greeting. Know ye that I John Holden heir
at law of Jeremiah Holden decd. & of the State of North Carolina & County of Duplin of the
one part and James Carr of the same place of the other part. Witnesseth that the said John
Holden for and in consideration of the sum of sixty pounds specie to him in hand paid by the
said James Carr, the receipt whereof he the said John Holden doth hereby acknowledge himself
to be fully satisfied contented & paid, hath bargained sold aliend & forever confirmed to him
the said James Carr his heirs & assigns two certain tract of land lying & being in the County
& province aforesaid on the No. side of Maxwell swamp containgin two hudnred and forty acres
be the same more or less it being the contents of a patten granted to the said Jeremiah Holdon
now decd. the 23rd day of February 1754. Begining at a pine by a branch, thence runing North
25 Et. 25 chains to a pine No. 55 Wt. 30 chains to a pine South 70 Wt. 36 chains to a gum by
said swamp & old field called Holdon's old field, also the contents of a paten granted to the
said John Holdon the twenty ninth day of October 1782. Begining at a maple & hornbeam on the
run in Maxwell swamp & runs east 60 pole to a red oad Sheffield's corner, thence east 100 pole
to a red oak his other corner, thence No. 10 Et. 28 pole to a red oak Robert Dickson's corner,
thence North 126 pole to a Lightwood stump, thence Wt. 26 pole to a pine Jeremiah Holdon's
corner, thence South 25 Wt.126 pole to a pine his other corner, thence No. Wt. 250 pole to a
gum his uper corner in the swamp, thence to the run and down the meanders thereof to the
begining, which said land contains in the whole by estimation two hundred & forty acres be the
same more or less. To have and to hold the above bargained land and premises with all the
appertenances to the same belonging or in any wise appertaining to him the said James Carr his
heirs & assigns forever, free from all former gifts grants mortgages intales dowers or right of
dowers or any other incumbrance whatsoever given or granted by him the said John Holdon the
above land & premises shall & will forever warrant & defend to the said James Carr his heirs &
assigns. In witness whereof the said John Holdon hath hereunto set his hand and seal the
twenty seventh day of September in the year of our Lord Christ 1785.
