Sweet Potato Pie
3 c. boiled, mashed potatoes 2 c. sugar
½ stick butter or margarine ½ c. milk
2 eggs, beaten slightly 1 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. Baking Powder
Add butter and sugar to potatoes. Cool, add eggs and other ingredients. Place in 2
unbaked pie shells. Sprinkle tops with sugar.
Bake at 300º. (Makes 2 large pies.)
This has now been a family favorite of our own now - so another tradition is carried into
yet another generation beyond me. I have found in making it, I can cut back on the
sugar w/no problems - I do use Butter - have used self-rising flour instead of baking
powder too. I don't put in nutmeg, as I prefer to add Vanilla - but some of my family
like to sprinkle nutmeg on top later - We serve this w/o any topping such as Whipped
Cream, etc - no need for 'overkill!'
Diane, my Dad, Harry Lee HOWELL, who was the youngest living child born to Lillian
Eugenia (LAMB) HOWELL, always said he believed that was his Mother's signature at
the bottom of the "Poor Man's Cake" recipe - My Mother had bought 3 copies of the
Cook Book for my sister, for me & for herself.
Lillian Eugenia (LAMB) was b 14 Sept 1859 either Berrien or Clinch Co, GA - d 10 Feb
1950, Lakeland, Lanier Co, GA (formerly known as Milltown, Berrien Co, GA).
"Jenny" (LAMB) was only child of Statira Ann E. (LOVEJOY) mar 1858 to John Carroll
LAMB, Maj. CSA,KIA b 1832 NC - d 13 July 1863 MS.
She had been called "Jenny" by the Methodist minister, Rev. Will TALLEY for the singer
famous during the times according to a paternal aunt.
Speaking of that Aunt - this is her recipe for a pie - will have to embarrass myself by
saying one Thanksgiving a long time back now, we were living away from our old home
& I wanted to make a Sweet Potato Pie - one of our traditional desserts for our family
all my life - no pumpkin pie for us South GA folks. I looked in this same Cook Co.
Cookbook & lo - behold: My Aunt Beth's Sweet Potato Pie Recipe under Pies - Mrs. H.
H. JONES, mother of Margaret Jossey. Aunt Beth was my Dad's sister, both children of
"Jenny" (LAMB) HOWELL, so the heritage is the same.
