Thomas DeVane King Bible
Contributed by Sloan Mason
The Huckleberry Historian - December 15, 1981
Mr. & Mrs. William R. DeVane, Jr., Chadbourn, NC, have provided the
entries from the bible. In a cover letter, they said: "The bible was
turned over to the Department of Archives of Alabama, by Miss Alice
King, along with other articles that belonged to William Rufus DeVane
King. We believe the bible was given to Margaret DeVane King by her
father Thomas DeVane (probably one to replace the one lost in the fire
prior to her move to Alabama.) Entered on one page of the bible is the
name and birth dates of slaves, whose names appear in Thomas DeVane's
handwriting, some go as far back as 1767, whose names later appear in
the will of Thomas DeVane, and were left to Margaret DeVane King. The
majority of the entries concern the Kings and their families."
