Individual biographical text for Bryan DeMarl Ford
Bryan DeMarl was born in New Berlin, Cenago County, New York. He was the
youngest son of John Allen and Sarah Alexander Ford. He was married in Duplin
County, North Carolina on October 9, 1851 to Shphronia Elenior Davis, the youngest
daughter of Samuel and Ctherine Tuttle Davis. Sophronia was born December 30, 1827
in Duplin County and died April 10, 1908 on Friday. The father of Sophronia, Samuel
Davis was born in 1781 and died in 1838. His wife was Catherine Tuttle, Samuel lived
and died at what was know as the “FOR Place” (Susie and Faison Smith lived there
until their death in 1984. Katie Susie Grady was a direct descendant. Their son
Wm. Aaron Smith lives there now). Samuel Davis served as a Captain in the county
militia. He was a man of large means and considerable prominence. He gave the
land for the “Old Prospect Meeting House” prior to 1810. The old David house was
burned April 10, 1990. Their daughter (Katie Ford Grady) told me Lougene S. Hemphill)
That the sparks and cinders blistered Byron’s bald head. They had gotten every thing
out of the house, but a strong wind shifted and blowed sparks on the furniture and it
all burned, including a grand father clock that stood at the head of the stairs. The
kitchen was not burned and it is still standing. Byron built a new house, which he
only finished one room and the old kitchen was attached to the back porch. Byron
D. Ford was 75 years old at the time of his death, May 2, 1899. It is said that
Byron D. Ford’s father came from Scotland and settled first in Buffalo, New Your.
Little is know of his parents of his early life. The earliest account of Byron in N.C.
was in Kenansville in 1847. Byron was a outstanding tombstone-cutter and craftsman
and his work was recognized above all masons of that time. The shed he used stood in
front of the house on the right side. (Pieces of marble was found in the airer, by
Lougene and Faison D. when they were children).
