Know all men by these piredentes that I Joshua D Mercer of the county of Duplin & State 
aforesaid in Consideration of the sum of three Hundred & sevinty five dollars to ive in hand
paid by John Mercer of the county of Duplin & State of North Carolina the receipt whereof
is hereby fulley acknowledged Have granted bargained & sold & by these present do
grant bargain sell & convey unto the said John Mercer a certain Negro Slave named
Cato about five years old to have & to hold the said Cato boy Slave the said John Mercer
his heirs assigns Executers & administratots forever free & discharged of any & all
incumbrance whatsoever & for the beter securety of the title hereby conveyed I for
my self my Heirs executers & administratars to & with the said John Mercers his heirs 
executers adminisiistratars & assigns To warrent & forever defined the saine from the 
lawfull Claim of aney & all persons whatever---.

In testimony wherreof I here unto set my hand & seal Apart the ninth day one thousand
eight Hundred & sixty one singned sealed & Delivered.
